The British Psychological Society's MHWP register has been designed to meet NHS England's specification and is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This represents a significant step forward in quality assurance, public protection, and professional recognition for you and your role. Not only is our register PSA accredited, but by joining the BPS, Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioners will become part of a community of almost 60,000 psychology professionals.
You will benefit from this network through access and exposure to a diverse range of professional expertise and experience, the ability to engage in CPD, free access to a range of resources, and more through BPS member benefits.
What do I need to register as an MHWP?
To join the register, you'll need to:
- Meet the training requirements for your specific role. The society is the sole accrediting body for the training courses for the MHWP programmes. You can find an accredited course through our accredited course search.
- Meet the practice requirements for your specific role
- Meet the supervision requirements for your specific role
- Be a Graduate Member, Full Member or Associate Member of the BPS (you can apply to join the society and the register at the same time).
To continue working in NHS commissioned healthcare, you will need to be on an approved register, by no later than 30 June 2026. However, please check with your employer to confirm any internal requirements and dates as these may differ.
Please note that you will not be eligible to register if you do not operate within the defined specified system of practice for an MHWP.
How long does my application take?
We have a dedicated team ready to process your application and once all evidence is submitted, we can process your application within approximately two to four weeks.
How do I apply?
If you are already a member of the BPS you can directly apply for the register on our website.
If you are not already a member of the BPS you will need to join us as an associate member, and as part of your application you will have the opportunity to apply for the register. These will be processed and approved together.
This can be done in three simple steps.
- Visit the Associate membership page and start your application.
We recommend that you get everything, including your academic transcript and identifying a supervisor, ready beforehand) - Select and complete the WPW section ensuring that your application is submitted as a combination (associate membership and WPW registration)
- Pay your application and registration fees.
The BPS provides a home for all those working as Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioners, whether you are just starting out in your training and are looking for advice, or have a few years' experience and are looking to develop your knowledge and career.
