BPS approved to provide registration scheme for CWPs and EMHPs

The BPS is delighted to announce that it has been approved, along with the BABCP, to provide a registration scheme for two wider psychological workforce roles.

24 April 2023

The BPS and the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies have both met the requirements for NHS England recognition of their registration schemes.

Both the BPS and BABCP will now provide individual registration for Childrens Wellbeing Practitioners (CWPs) and Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs), in addition to Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners and Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology (Scotland), as well as Clinical Associates in Psychology at a later stage.

All of these roles are registered through our PSA-accredited Wider Psychological Workforce Register, which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. CWPs and EMHPs are now able to apply to join the register.

Registration of these emerging roles helps to ensure quality and public protection, and provides professional recognition to those working in them.

The launch of the BPS’s Associate Member grade created a place within the society for people working in these three roles. More information on associate membership is available on our website.

Sarb Bajwa, chief executive of the BPS, said:

“I’m delighted that NHS England and NHS Improvement have approved the BPS, alongside the BABCP, to provide a registration scheme to help provide recognition to CWPs and EMHPs, who perform vital roles in the psychological workforce.

“The BPS is the home of psychology in the UK, and we’re proud to welcome members of the wider psychological workforce into our community.

“Providing a registration scheme for these roles gives vital professional recognition to those in the psychological workforce, and gives the public assurance of quality when using their services.”
