Organising the BPS Social Psychology Section annual conference 2024 at Queen's University of Belfast (2-4 September 2024) was a truly rewarding experience. The event brought together over 100 participants to explore our central theme, 'Utilising social psychology to address conflicts, societal divisions and cohesion'.

In today's world, marked by rising polarisation and inequality, our conference focused on innovative research and practical strategies to foster unity and tackle societal challenges.

A diverse range of symposiums

The conference featured a diverse range of symposiums that addressed various aspects of social psychology. Topics included the complexities of nostalgia, the impact of political discourse, strategies for preventing intergroup tensions, and pathways to building inclusive communities.

We also delved into rebuilding trust in the digital age, fostering positive intergroup relationships through religious identities, and enhancing public safety through better group dynamics. Additionally, our blitz sessions provided quick, insightful discussions on key areas such as wellbeing, identity, prejudice, and inequality, offering participants a broad spectrum of perspectives.

The Peace Walls

A memorable highlight was the walking tour around the Peace Walls, which served as a powerful reminder of the importance of bridging divides, both academically and in real life. This experiential component underscored our commitment to applying social psychology principles to create tangible social change.

Reflecting on the preparation and execution of this conference, I'm inspired by the collaborative spirit and dedication of everyone involved. The event not only celebrated significant advancements in our field but also highlighted urgent areas needing our collective attention. As we move forward, the insights and connections forged during these three days will undoubtedly drive meaningful solutions and continued progress in addressing the complex social issues of our time.

On behalf of the organising team at QUB,
