The SGIP committee made a proposal to the BPS Research Team last year to:

  1. Better understand the needs and views of their membership base by designing and running a confidential survey of members which asked about communications preferences, views of SGIP's activities, and what else SGIP should be doing to support independent practitioners. (This was building on all the work that Paul John Griffiths and Elaine Iljon Foreman undertook around last year's AGM).
  2. Discover what other prestigious professional bodies in the UK and abroad provide for their independent practitioner members so that we can understand the following:
  • What other professional bodies are offering for independent practitioners compared with the BPS – a 'gap' analysis
  • How easy/difficult is it to find resources for independent practitioners elsewhere, and how this compares with the BPS
  • Information on the number of independent practitioners both inside and outside of the BPS - please see the survey results below and on the SGIP microsite.

The survey results summary and recommendations were

SGIP has a good offering of resources for those in independent/private practice, which is on par with BABCP's and BACP's offerings. It also is the only organisation that clearly defines "independent practitioner". SGIP seems to offer more than all other professional bodies, apart from the APA, which has the most extensive IP offering, though most of its resources aren't freely available unless you are a member.

We were very fortunate to gain the outstanding services of the BPS Research Team - David Hills and Lily Tong – so thank them for the work they did.
