Welsh government

Increased funding for new allied health professionals

We welcome the news that £5 million recurring funding will be allocated to health boards to increase allied health professionals, including psychologists. However, Welsh government officials tell us that it will be for health boards to determine exactly how to utilise this funding to develop models and teams that best meet the needs of their population.

Together for Mental Health

The Welsh government’s 10-year Mental Health Strategy came to a close in December 2022. Lynne Neagle, the Deputy Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing has promised to consult widely in 2023 with stakeholders to inform a public consultation due at the end of 2023. We will be taking part and will be asking you to share your views.

Health and Social Care Workforce Implementation Plans published

On 1 February, the long-awaited implementation plans for the joint HEIW and SCW Workforce Strategy were published. A Strategic Workforce Implementation Board will advise the minister on progress. HEIW will “review allied health professions to understand the current position and future needs to deliver our services, resulting in an AHP retention plan” by July 2023.

The Senedd’s Health and Social Care Committee (Dec ’22) sets out its recommendations to Welsh government for tackling mental health inequalities in Wales and states that the new mental health strategy (see above) must “recognise and address the impact of trauma, and tackle inequalities in society and the wider causes of poor mental health”. Russell George, Chair of the Health and Social Care Committee, is inviting views on our priorities that can help shape their forward programme ’23 – ‘24.  The committee is meeting initially at the end of February but will formally engage with stakeholders over the summer.

We will be taking part and will be asking you to share your views.

Open Consultations

Development of the Outdoor Education (Wales) Bill (deadline 17 March)

The proposed Bill seeks to establish a statutory duty on local authorities to ensure that all young people receiving maintained education are provided with the opportunity to experience residential outdoor education, for at least one week, at some stage during their school years.

We will be responding to the consultation and if you would like your views included, please contact Manel. Or you can submit your views via the Online Survey (below) to submit your own views.
