On Wednesday 8 November, as your Political Psychology Section early career representative, I hosted a talk as part of the BPS Psychology Careers Festival - a festival to showcase all things psychology careers!
Since political psychology does not already have a clear, dedicated career pathway in the same way as, for example, educational psychology or clinical psychology, we believed it was vital during this event for us to showcase how you can work towards a career in political psychology. As well as this, it was an opportunity to underline the importance of this area, how it is relevant to other areas of psychology, and its many useful applications to the real world.
Hence, I gave a talk titled, 'How does psychology influence and work within the political environment?'
The talk considered a variety of topics, including:
- What is political psychology?
- How does psychology influence our political environment?
- Examples of applying political psychology to another area of psychology
- Examples of study in political psychology
- Examples of how you can work towards a career in political psychology
- Introduction to the Political Psychology Section
There were discussion activities throughout the talk, including an opportunity for attendees to provide feedback on what they want to see the Political Psychology Section do for early career members, as well as a Q&A at the end.
Attendees, who had backgrounds in various areas of psychology - such as forensic psychology and neuropsychology - offered lots of great questions, comments and useful feedback. This feedback will be forwarded to the Political Psychology Section committee for consideration and implementation where possible, as plans for upcoming events are underway.
We hope to host similar talks and events in future. If you were not able to attend this particular talk, we encourage you strongly to keep an eye on the Political Psychology Bulletin. We're keen to ensure you receive information about future events for the section, responses to your feedback, as well as opportunities for early career members.
