Higher Education Psychology Teacher of the Year Award Winner announced

Congratulations to Dr Madeleine Pownall, winner of the HE Psychology Teacher of the Year Award for 2022.

 Winner: Dr Madeleine Pownall

We are pleased to announce that Dr Madeleine Pownall has been named HE Psychology Teacher of the Year 2022 at this year's DARTP Annual Conference.

Madeleine impressed the judges with her case study on Supporting Students to Reimagine Social Psychology through a Critical Feminist Lens. Along with the title of Higher Education Psychology Teacher of the Year 2022, Madeleine also receives £1,500 in cash and £250 of Oxford University Press books of her choice.

More about Madeleine: A lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Leeds, and a Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence Fellow, she completed her PhD in April 2022, and is now contributing to the re-design of the Psychology curriculum through the institutional Curriculum Redefined Project at the University of Leeds. She leads the Research in the Psychology of Student Education research group.

Madeleine is particularly interested in pedagogical research which examines issues such as learning communities, research training, and psychological literacy, and regularly publishes under these topics. Her LITE Fellowship centres around Global Citizenship in the university curricula, using mixed methods. She is the author of a psychology textbook, A Feminist Companion to Social Psychology, published by McGraw-Hill, and aims to embed the principles of feminist scholarship into her student education practice.

Runner-up: Dr Allán Laville

Dr Allán Laville is Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, and Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Reading.

A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, he is also a member of the Scientific Programme Advisory Group for the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, contributing to national CPD for psychological practitioners.

In 2019, Allán won the Reading University Student Union Award for Diverse and Inclusive Teaching Excellence and in 2020, he was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship. Allán was a finalist in the 

British Psychological Society and Oxford University Press Higher Education Psychology Teacher of the Year 2020 competition.

Proudly supported by Oxford University Press and the British Psychological Society Division of Academics, Researchers & Teachers in Psychology (BPS DARTP), the Higher Education Psychology Teacher of the Year Award aims to recognise and reward exceptional teaching talent.  The DART-P committee are pleased to announce the launce of a new award in 2023 to recognise the work of psychology teachers in the Pre-Tertiary Sector.
