But if you missed it, don't worry – a recording of the event is now available to watch on YouTube.
There were presentations from section chair Professor Gavin Sullivan, and members of the Challenging Histories group of the BPS History of Psychology Centre. Other contributors included Dr John Hall, Professor John Oates, Dr Mike Chamerette, and Professor Anthony Pelosi.
Topics covered included a look at the life and work of psychologist and geneticist Sir Cyril Burt, which challenges many historical assumptions about psychology; and Hans Eysenck's 'unsafe research' on personality and fatal diseases, with the presenter asking, 'How could this have happened?'
Professor Sullivan said:
"This event showed the importance of critical investigations of historical issues via archival research and re-evaluations of previous findings. We explored ways in which some research has become 'hidden' due to systematic neglect and other more sinister discriminatory and systemic factors.
"The importance of exposing previous instances of possibly fraudulent and unethical behaviour is highlighted for the ongoing reconstruction of psychology's history and consolidation of values of transparency and openness going forward."
Examples of reinterpretations, both negative and positive, of the work of past figures in psychology are highlighted, Professor Sullivan added.
