This is a call for expressions of interest to write and publish a review of the following special section of the British Journal of Social Psychology: Open Science, Qualitative Methods and Social Psychology: Possibilities and Tensions[1]. The review will be published in the Spring 2025 issue of the QMiP Bulletin.
As the introductory editorial of this special section notes, 'In recent years, there has been a focus in social psychology on efforts to improve the robustness, rigour, transparency and openness of psychological research. This has led to a plethora of new tools, practices and initiatives that each aim to combat questionable research practices and improve the credibility of social psychological scholarship.
'However, the majority of these efforts derive from quantitative, deductive, hypothesis-testing methodologies, and there has been a notable lack of in-depth exploration about what the tools, practices and values may mean for research that uses qualitative methodologies. Here, we introduce a Special Section of BJSP: Open Science, Qualitative Methods and Social Psychology: Possibilities and Tensions.
'The authors critically discuss a range of issues, including authorship, data sharing and broader research practices. Taken together, these papers urge the discipline to carefully consider the ontological, epistemological and methodological underpinnings of efforts to improve psychological science, and advocate for a critical appreciation of how mainstream open science discourse may (or may not) be compatible with the goals of qualitative research' (Pownall et al., 2023, p.1581).
The QMiP Bulletin is calling for an author or team of authors to review this special section and share their reflections on the next steps for qualitative research and open science. The author or team of authors will receive £125 in Amazon vouchers as a thank you for their contribution.
This review article will be published under the 'Brief reports' section of the QMiP Bulletin, with an expected word count of 2,000-4,000, excluding abstract, key words, and references. Three to five key words should be included, and the abstract should be 150-200 words. Authors are asked to read the journal's submission guidelines carefully, which can be found here: https://explore.bps.org.uk/content/bpsqmip
