Responding to an investigation from the Guardian which found that over five million people are experiencing stress due to a range of poverty-related issues, President of the British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:

"It is sadly not surprising that the public are experiencing record levels of stress, as millions grapple with financial strain, health issues, and housing insecurity. Current levels of poverty in this country are completely unacceptable and a shame on our society.

"The psychological impact of living in poverty should never be underestimated, as poverty significantly increases the risk of developing mental health difficulties. Combined with mental health waiting lists growing exponentially, there are over two million people in England currently waiting for NHS support; it's a perfect storm.

"A key first step would be reviewing Universal Credit, ensuring the basic rate is high enough for people to cover their essential costs, as well as growing the mental health workforce to keep up with demand."
