Quality and quantity: Research methods in sport and exercise psychology

Information on research methods in sport and exercise psychology, from in-depth interviews to large scale surveys.

17 January 1996

This is the second British Psychological Society Sport and Exercise Psychology Section occasional publication, based on a one-day workshop on qualitative and quantitative research in sport and exercise. Research methods have long been crucial targets for attention and evaluation in sport and exercise psychology, and the recent re-emergence of qualitative methods as respectable in general psychology alongside, in combination/competition with or instead of traditional ones has given this fresh impetus. Sport and exercise psychology is a particularly rich source of examples of different methodologies which cover the whole gamut from case histories and in-depth interviews via laboratory and other experiments to large scale surveys. Much of this spread is at least touched on in this publication.
