About
This event will explore the nature of the person centred approach and its implications for practice in health psychology.
The event will consist of two key elements, firstly, a brief exploration of some of the theoretical, ethical and practical dimensions of a person centred approach rooted in the philosophical and historical traditions of humanistic/existential psychology.
Some key concepts will be explored in terms of their relevance to health psychology, including the therapeutic relationship (the six 'necessary and sufficient' conditions for change), the 'non-directive' attitude and more contemporary developments in the process/experiential field.
The second element of the event will focus on practice, and draw on the experience of health psychology practitioners delivering health behaviour change interventions whilst drawing upon the person centred approach - the challenges, opportunities and dilemmas encountered.
Participants will be encouraged to explore their own 'models' of clinical practice in relation to these review the strengths and opportunities presented by person centred approaches to clinical practice in the health psychology domain.
Learning Outcomes:
- To understand the theoretical and historical basis of the person centred approach and its relevance to health psychology
- To appreciate the ethical and practical dimensions of applying a person centred model of working within a health psychology context
- To understand the opportunities and drawbacks presented by the person centred approach in supporting health psychology practice in a number of real-world settings
