Speakers

Dr Karen Scholes, Consultant Clinical Psychologist

Karen was the Founding Chair of the Holistic Faculty (or DCP Special Interest Group as it was called then) 20 years ago. Karen saw the benefits of formalising the group within the DCP, in order for holistic thinking to be recognised within, what was then, our regulatory body. Karen has a longstanding interest in holistic approaches, taking a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach to psychological practice. She found this of particular value in her work in the Clinical Health Psychology setting, working with people whose psychological and physical health needs are intertwined and where the traditional mind-body split was clearly unhelpful. Karen has worked in commissioning roles as well as psychology delivery roles throughout her career and is currently leading the Department of Psychology Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Karen also works in private practice, providing coaching services and Expert Witness reports to the Court in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. In her personal life, Karen has recently discovered the delights of Taoist meditation practices and is working towards qualification as a level one trainer. Karen loves to paint landscapes, dance and walk in the woodland near her home.

Jane Street, Chair of the Holistic Faculty

Jane is now retired after working as a clinical psychologist in the NHS for nearly 30 years in clinical, teaching and leadership roles, in adult mental health. She continues to provide mentoring after retiring from the NHS in 2020. With a longstanding interest in the bio/psycho/social/spiritual, she is one of the founding members of the Faculty and is currently Chair.  Gardening and walking provide an important connection to the natural world, while cats keep her on her toes at home.

Dr Alison Bennetts, Clinical Psychologist

Dr Alison Bennetts is a dual qualified Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Teacher from The University of Southampton. Her research specialises in holistic approaches to mental health, and she has published theory and original research into the psychological benefits of yoga practice, transdiagnostic approaches to mental health and male psychology. She acts as Sustainability Lead on the University of Southampton Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme and is passionate about the reciprocal relationship between human and ecological health; additionally holding the position of Co-Chair of the Group of Trainers in Clinical Psychology Planetary Health subgroup, which leads on the integration of planetary health within the clinical psychology curriculum and research nationwide.
