About
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and similar tv shows are hugely popular, and have the power to shape juror attitudes and behaviours towards forensic science evidence in real criminal trials. Moreover, hearing and reviewing evidence of traumatic events and human remains has the potential to cause significant upset and trauma to jurors.
Recent technological advances in the presentation of complex forensic science evidence allows for highly detailed and graphic photographs, computer models, and 3D printed models of human remains to be presented to jurors in order to demonstrate victim injuries.
The hands-on experience of feeling the marks of trauma when holding 3D printed replicas has the potential to be more upsetting and traumatic for jurors due to the enhanced physical closeness and tactile interaction they promote.
In this talk I discuss whether jurors are adequately supported following exposure to this type of evidence, and the impact these emotive 3D printed remains may have on juror accuracy and impartiality within the deliberation room.
