This webinar will provide an overview of the challenges and experiences of recruiting and retaining psychology staff in older adult settings.

The webinar will look at the current context across the 4 Nations within different NHS settings.

It will hear from the director of the workforce and training group within the Division of Clinical Psychology and how their work can influence pathways to recruitment.

Work around service structures, preceptorships, competencies and what might be working in some settings will be discussed.

The experiences of psychologists new to work in older adult services alongside those who have retired will be shared.

Finally, an opportunity to share ideas and suggest innovations and plans going forward will be provided.

Learning Outcomes
  • To identify the challenges in recruiting older adult psychology posts nationally.
  • To understand the role of the DCP in addressing this through their workforce and training group
  • To learn from the experiences of psychologists across the career path in choosing to take or leave posts
  • To collaborate on innovative ideas to boost recruitment across settings.

Older adult clinical psychologists and service leads including non-psychology managers.

Speakers 

Dr Becci Dow
Head of Psychology Service, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust & Chair of FPOP.

Becci is an older adult clinical psychologist who has worked across services in Cambridgeshire, Wales, Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire. As Chair of FPOP, Becci has worked to develop the competency document for older adult clinical psychology trainees and presented to the GTiCP (Group of Trainers in Clinical Psychology) and the Workforce and Development Group about the need to train older adult ready clinical psychologists who are ready and enthusiastic about a career in this area. In her own service Becci has developed innovative training places to ensure good experiences for trainees; has developed preceptorship posts in older adult settings and joint roles across service specialities. Becci has close to 20 years experience in older adult services across NHS settings, including inpatient, memory service, CMHT and acute hospitals and clinical health.

Dr Samantha Wood
Clinical Psychologist in Older Adult Services, Buckinghamshire, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Sam is an older adult clinical psychologist who qualified two years ago and moved into a band 7 to 8a preceptorship post across inpatient and CMHT older adult settings. She currently also holds a specialist older adult role within IAPT. Sam went into clinical training with an interest and Masters in neuropsychology and developed this through training with a specialist placement in an inpatient setting and completing research exploring behaviour support in ID settings. Sam is currently developing service options for a care home support intervention and supervising two trainee clinical psychologists and an assistant psychologist.
