Dr Kathryn Dykes will provide information about two new psychological roles within services.  The Associate Psychological Practitioner (APP) is a HEE funded development from the North West of England and is currently in the second year of the project with a third intake of trainees planned for March 2023.  The Mental Health Wellbeing Practitioner role (MHWBP) is a national  programme funded by HEE with the first intake in March 2022.   Kathryn will discuss the aims and requirements for these roles and the opportunities they bring as well as their integration into clinical services.

Dr Helen Stirk will provide an overview of the CAPS role and how they are implementing their service. She will reflect on some of the opportunities as well as some of the areas to think about when considering implementing the new roles. 

Learning outcomes:
  • Understanding of new roles within Psychology 

  • Understanding of how these roles may be applied within Older Adult Services 

  • Understanding of some of the opportunities and challenges in setting these roles up 

Target audience:  Older Adult Clinicians, Older Adult Managers and Service Leads, Psychological Professions Leads, public interested in services for older people

Dr Kathryn Dykes

Dr Kathryn Dykes is currently working as the Psychological Lead around community transformation in Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust.  As such she is leading on the recruitment and development of new psychological roles within the organisation.  Kathryn is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Accredited CAT Practitioner and Supervisor who has always worked professionally within older adult mental health services.  

Dr Helen Stirk

Dr Helen Stirk  Lead Psychologist West London NHS Trust Older Peoples' Mental Health Service. Helen is an older adult clinical psychologist who has worked across services in West London and much of Surrey. She has been working in the Ealing Cognitive Impairment and Dementia service since 2012.  Helen has been involved in developing a new Specialist Older Adults Mental Health Service for West London which began operating in the Summer of 2021 and is now working to expand this service with a therapy led model for those with mild to moderate mental health needs. The expanded service will include CAPS in each of the teams and Helen has been part of a group of older adult psychologists in discussion with University College London to develop an older adult focus for their existing CAPS MSc.
