Thema'r Gyfadran Seicoleg Pobl Hŷn 2023 - cynhadledd flynyddol ar-lein a gynhelir gan y Grwpiau Daearyddol Cymreig, fydd Yma o Hyd: Yn Gwneud Pethau'n Gwahanol.

Fel seicolegwyr sy'n gweithio yng Nghymru, dymunwn rannu gyda chi, yr ysbryd/teimlad sy'n cael ei ysgogi gan gân Dafydd Iwan 'Yma o Hyd', sy'n wreiddiol yn cyfeirio at yr iaith Gymraeg, ond erbyn hyn wedi ei fabwysiadu gan y genedl Gymraeg ar gyfer Cwpan y Byd pêl-droed y dynion, i gynrychioli ysbryd o ddal ati a symud ymlaen er gwaethaf pawb a phopeth.

I ni, mae hyn yn teimlo'n briodol i'r cyfnod anodd yr ydym yn parhau i weithio ynddo, wrth i ni geisio a chofleidio ffyrdd o weithio'n wahanol ac yn greadigol, er mwyn cefnogi a hyrwyddo anghenion seicolegol y bobl hŷn ledled y DU.

Rydym am gydnabod sut mae'r heriau sy'n cyfrannu at ofid yr unigolion a'r teuluoedd hŷn rydym yn gweithio gyda nhw hefyd yn effeithio arnom ni a'r timau staff yr ydym yn gweithio ynddynt.

Byddem wrth ein boddau'n clywed am y ffyrdd rydych chi a'ch gwasanaethau wedi bod yn ymateb i'ch anghenion lleol, rhanbarthol neu genedlaethol. Rydym yn awyddus i ddysgu oddi wrth ein gilydd, am sut rydym yn gwneud pethau'n wahanol, newidiadau yn y profiad o heneiddio, a'r hyn sy'n ein helpu a'n hysbrydoli i ddal ati a ffynnu.

The theme for the Faculty of the Psychology of Older People 2023 online annual conference, hosted by the Welsh Geographical Groups, will be Yma o Hyd: Gwneud Pethau'n Gwahanol / Still Here: Doing Things Differently.

As psychologists working in Wales, we wish to share with you the spirit evoked by Dafydd Iwan's song 'Yma o Hyd' (Still Here), referring initially to the Welsh language, and embraced by the Welsh nation for the recent men's football World Cup to represent a spirit of keeping going and moving forward against the odds.

To us, this feels appropriate to the difficult times in which we continue to work, as we seek and embrace ways to work differently and creatively, in order to support and promote the psychological needs of older people across the UK.

We want to acknowledge how the challenges that contribute to the distress of the older individuals and families we work with also affect us and the staff teams in which we work.

We would love to hear about the ways in which you and your services have been responding to your local, regional or national needs. We are keen to learn from each other, about how we are doing things differently, changes in the experience of ageing, and what helps and inspires us to keep going and thrive.

Sarah Wydall

Sarah Wydall

Sarah Wydall, Reader in Criminology, is Director for the Centre for Age, Gender and Social Justice and Principal Investigator on the Dewis Choice Initiative 2015-2023 at Aberystwyth University

See link: https://dewischoice.org.uk/   Dewis Choice uniquely combines longitudinal research, capturing the 'lived help-seeking experiences' of older victim survivors; a co-produced service providing long term, intensive support and we also provide a platform for older people to speak 'truths to power' about their justice-seeking experiences, using their voices to co-create resources to transform the response to domestic abuse in later life.

In 2022, Sarah was awarded a Vice Chancellor's award for Exceptional Impact beyond Academia, Sarah is also the recipient of a Welsh Crucible award for research leadership and in 2016 Sarah won the Audrey Jones Memorial Award for feminist scholarship 'Undertaking transformative research with victim –survivors in Wales –Dewis Choice  a story of feminist praxis'  Sarah's publications focus largely on gendered harms https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/lac/staff-profiles/listing/profile/sww/

Dementia and Domestic Abuse : A Gap or Chasm in domestic abuse policy and practice?

This paper will provide an overview of a unique Initiative, Dewis Choice, designed by older people in Wales in 2015. This presentation will provide an insight into the initial research that informed the creation of Dewis Choice and highlight key findings from the longitudinal study that challenge misconceptions about justice-seeking and help-seeking behaviours in the context of domestic abuse in later life.

The paper will then examine the response to the co-existence of dementia and domestic abuse. The importance of consent, decision-making , capacity and access to justice is discussed in relation to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the European Court of Human Rights. The author will then critically explore the range of domestic abuse protections to highlight how different spheres of practice are rarely integrated, both in terms of dementia provision and domestic abuse provision, resulting in discrimination. The question is asked whether these groups of victims-survivors fall into chasm because of entrenched cultural practices, an inability by providers to use legislative powers effectively or other factors. The paper uses a case example to show how, by being able to provide long term intensive support, and follow cases longitudinally, Dewis Choice is in a position to facilitate a coordinated community response, challenging the 'rule of confidence' about the care dynamic in the context of domestic abuse in later life.

Bram de Boer

Bram de Boer

Dr Bram de Boer is an assistant professor working at the Department of Health Services Research at Maastricht University. He is a psychologist by background and finished his PhD research in 2017.

During his PhD he investigated green care farms as an alternative for regular nursing homes. Currently, his works focuses on effects of innovative nursing home care environments for people with dementia and how elements of these environments can be implemented into regular nursing homes

Title:

Innovative nursing home care: what are the working mechanisms? Examples from practice & insights from research

Abstract:

Many alternative innovative long-term care environments are developing. Although some studies report promising results regarding the effects of these new types of settings, findings are mixed. This is partly caused by the large variety of settings. More knowledge is needed on the successful elements and underlying mechanisms of the care environment. During the presentation, some illustrative examples of innovative nursing homes developing in the Netherlands will be discussed. Furthermore, first insights into the physical, social, and organizational context of innovative nursing homes and their working mechanisms will be shared.
