This session features three short presentations chaired by Bruno De Oliveira, followed by a panel discussion, with three early career researchers whose work uses creative and arts-based methods to great effect.
- Gabriel Hoosain Khan will speak on 'Creating Queer Worldscapes: Mapping QTBIPOC healing and resistance in Brighton.'
This practice-based presentation introduces the "Creating Queer Worldscapes" mapping exercise, developed within the Creative Change Laboratory (CCoLAB), a collaborative art-making space in Brighton where QTBIPOC individuals explore experiences of healing and resistance. Building on recent research that uses art to reimagine wellbeing and envision alternative futures, the presentation looks at how QTBIPOC individuals navigate spaces of both sanctuary and marginalization. - Alex Fitch will speak on 'Examining Depictions of Inclusion and Care in Sabba Khan's Architectural Comics.'
This talk looks at how comics by architect turned graphic novelist Sabba Khan depict immigrant experiences in Britain, mixed in with stories of social inclusion and well-being. Khan's work mixes traditional comic book rendering, with more diagrammatical architectural drawings, and offers ways that the immigrant experience in the UK can be shared and understood, using innovative forms of sequential art. - Dr Elle Whitcroft will speak on 'Between LGBTQ+ Generations: Using Creative Methods for LGBTQ+ Public Health.'
She will discuss a UKRI-funded creative research project and wellbeing intervention designed to encourage LGBTQ+ intergenerational connection and community, using creative methods including collage, comics, zines, painting, creative writing, and art talking groups. The aim of this work is to understand how arts-based methods contributes to a better understanding of LGBTQ+ intergenerational experiences around community, care, and healthy ageing.
