Decolonising psychological practice: Applying African psychology to go from good to great

There are increasing calls for more training in non-Eurocentric psychology such as African psychology.

The over-representation of people of African ancestry in severe mental health settings suggests there is a need to understand the psychology of people of African ancestry from something other than a Eurocentric perspective.

Furthermore, the lack of people of African ancestry sustained at high bands within applied psychology professions suggests a psychology which is based on their experiences is needed.

This webinar offers an introduction to the discipline of African psychology, why it is needed and the added value it can bring.

It will introduce different schools of African psychology and compare Eurocentric and African psychology paradigms.

It will consider issues that may be encountered when working with people of African ancestry, models relevant to the upliftment of people of African ancestry, models explaining particular issues experienced by people of African ancestry, and will introduce useful tools.

This webinar will be recorded. The recording will be available for 12 weeks after the live session.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

• have an appreciation of what African Psychology is and why it is needed
• have models applicable to understanding people of African ancestry in particular
• know additional tools for intervening with people of African ancestry which can be applied to other groups
• be able to apply theories and tools applicable to working in a Clinical and/ or Counselling Psychology capacity with people of African ancestry

This webinar is suitable for a wide audience including trainee and newly qualified psychologoists, as well as more experienced practitioner psychologists.  The webinar would also be relevant to university lecturers and researchers.

Webinar presenter: Dr Erica McInnis CPsychol

Dr McInnis was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2016 following study of African psychology.  She went on to launch Nubia Wellness and Healing (NWAH), a company to spread learnings from her fellowship.

In 2022, Dr McInnis delivered a successful webinar for the BPS in 'Key concepts in African psychology for psychological trauma prevention and recovery'. There were calls for further training in African psychology as part of decolonising the curriculum, making psychology both appeal to and represent diverse communities, and to give depth to topics covered in this session.

Dr McInnis currently runs an online school teaching African psychology and regularly lectures on several Doctorate in Counselling and Clinical Psychology training programmes in African psychology.
