DCPNI Clinical Health SIG Annual Symposium - Women’s Health in Clinical Practice and Research
- Health
Psychological well-being and women health are two important areas that have recently seen increasing interest in policy and research, as well as the design and delivery of health and care services.
When it comes to women, female health encompasses various physical, emotional, and social factors that influence their overall quality of life.
Within the Northern Ireland Context, Women's Health and Wellbeing issues are already high priorities within the DoH, with the development of a Women's Health Action Plan underway.
The Women's Health Action Plan will focus on areas which cover the whole life course, including fertility and pregnancy, post-natal healthcare, baby loss, menopause, and gynaecological services.
"A Women's Health Action Plan for Northern Ireland will, for the first time, bring all of that work together into a unified plan, to demonstrate what we are trying to achieve and highlight where greater attention will be needed." Department of Health, 2024.
Similarly, the NHS England Woman's health strategy published in 2022 outlined three main areas of focus:
- Health-specific areas such as menstrual health, gynaecological conditions, menopause, cancers and fertility-related issues.
- Broader social approaches to improving women's health in education, the workplace and targeting social disparities.
- Healthcare professional and systemic processes including education and training for healthcare professionals as well as research, the use of data and the development of digital health solutions.
Additional governmental priorities identified more recently include tackling disparities and improving support for vulnerable women including victims of sexual abuse and violence by ensuring training and support systems are working collaboratively and efficiently.
Event Purpose:
The DCPNI SIG have made significant efforts to regenerate activity and engagement within the group, and ran a successful meeting in December 2023 that allowed SIG members to come together and discuss recent relevant issues within Clinical Health Psychology.
During this meeting, the need to bring more attention to the issues related to Women's Health was recognised, and it was agreed to have this topic as the focus at the next DCPNI Health SIG meeting scheduled for December 2024.
It is hoped that this meeting will set the scene for the development of a larger DCPNI CPD event in 2025, in line with the priorities set out by the Women's Health Action Plan.
