This Symposium is jointly hosted by the Special Group for Psychology, Health and Social Care (PHASC) and the London & Home Counties Branch of the BPS.
You will hear from a range of internationally renowned speakers on topics including Kiva, an evidence-based, highly effective programme of intervention and prevention of bullying in schools, initially developed in Finland, and now used in over 20 countries.
The success of implementing KiVa in a Welsh primary school will be described by its Headteacher including a video of pupils opinions and a case-study of a perpetrator.
Finally, you will hear a detailed review of international research on Cyberbullying .
This event will be held at:
- The Royal Society of Medicine
Wimpole Street
London
The event will be a "hybrid event" so that delegates can attend online if they can't attend in person, and will run from 9-30 am until 1-30pm.
Lunch is not included, but there are lots of places to eat in the locality (e.g. John Lewis which is just over the road from the RSM).
Further information
The Symposium Chair, Professor Judy Hutchings is Co-Director of the Centre for Evidence Based Early Intervention at Bangor University, and is one of the UK's leading researchers in this field.
Judy has pioneered the introduction of KiVa (a bullying prevention programme, initially in Wales, but now throughout the UK).
Judy will briefly describe the elements of KiVa and its evidence-based effectiveness before introducing Professor Christina Salmivalli (Turku University, Finland), who will be attending/presenting remotely.
Christina and her team developed the KiVa anti-bullying programme which is now implemented in large scale in over 20 countries throughout Europe and the World. She will outline the findings from her early studies as well as more recent research done in Finland and elsewhere.
Next, Mrs Lorraine Dalton (Headteacher, Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, North Wales) will describe the successes of KiVa in her school and show a video of pupils describing their experience of the Anti-bullying programme.
She will then introduce her Home-School Liaison Officer, Jo Jackson Wyatt, who will present a brief Case-study of the effects on a perpetrator of bullying.
The final presentation will be by Professor Lucy Bowes, Oxford University, who will review the international research and theory on Cyberbullying, and describe her own work on Cyberbullying trends and its impact on wellbeing.
The Discussant for the Symposium is Valerie Hero, Independent Consultant Child and Educational Psychologist, who is a member of the PHASC Committee.
