Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee is a Standing Committee of the Board of Trustees.

It promotes the ethical practice of psychology and is responsible for the Code of Ethics and Conduct and other ethical guidance.

What are the main responsibilities of the Ethics Committee?

The committee is responsible for:

  • Promoting the ethical practice of psychology
  • Providing guidance to members on ethical matters relating to psychology
  • Overseeing, monitoring, coordinating and communicating to members and the public the guidance available form the Society on ethics matters, including scope and the means of communicating it
  • Considering the impact of ethical issues and guidance on training, education and continuing professional development, and to develop mechanisms for communicating relevant information into Institutions responsible for delivery in those areas
  • Taking steps proactively to prepare, or have prepared, ethical guidance statements, or have modified existing statements when deficiencies in the current guidance available from the Society become apparent
  • Developing the means and mechanisms to assist members in the consideration and resolution of ethical dilemmas
  • Monitoring the decisions taken by the Member Conduct Officer and the Board of Trustees in order that psychologists can corporately learn from the decisions of these Committees, when highlighting ethical issues which have not been considered before that can be incorporated into the guidance on ethical matters available to the Society
  • Maintaining an awareness of the ethical statements by other psychological organisations in th UK and internationallu
  • Monitoring Society guidance on ethical matters with those of other, especially European, psychological associations
  • Encouraging institutions in which psychologists work to establish their own multidisciplinary or other appropriate Ethics Committees and support mechanisms to review proposals for research or other activities, enquiries and investigations, but not to undertake such reviews of individual proposals itself
  • Monitoring and developing the mechanisms to provide ethical advice to members, the public and the media on professional practice
  • Monitoring diversity and equality issues which may have implications for the advice that to members about their conduct as psychologists
  • Administering and overseeing the Award for the Promoting Equality of Opportunity
  • A commitment to actively promote 'a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion within our discipline'
