In the week the government has published its 10-year plan to reform the NHS, we're celebrating the vital role psychological professionals play in supporting the health and wellbeing of people across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
While our analysis of the plan is underway and we explore with our members what the implications and opportunities of the 10-year plan are for psychology and its workforce, its clear we have a fundamental role to play in delivering a transformed NHS.
So, we want to take this opportunity to thank the psychological professionals in the NHS and also recognise the incredible work of all its employees. Staff are its lifeblood, and it's vital we look after those who spend their days looking after others.
The BPS will continue to advocate for the role of psychology in the provision of staff mental health and wellbeing services, and you can catch up on the latest news on our campaign in this blog from our President Dr Roman Raczka.
Psychology matters in creating an NHS that's fit for the future. Through our Psychology Matters programme, we've heard inspiring testimony from our members about their work in the NHS, and the difference it makes to people's lives.
- Clinical psychologist Dr Ceri Trevethan specialises in neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation, and shares how she uses psychology to help people struggling with PTSD and trauma.
- Assistant psychologist Melda Hassan describes the life-changing support she provides to those with functional neurological disorder, through her role in the NHS.
- Consultant clinical psychologist Dr Liz Gregory spoke to us about her previous work in the NHS, and her role in developing the NEST framework; a whole system approach for supporting mental wellbeing services for babies, children, young people, and their parents, carers, and communities in Wales.
- Consultant clinical psychologist and BPS President Dr Roman Raczka shared the impact of his NHS work with people with learning disabilities and autism, and explains why he's proud to have a career in a compassionate profession.
