Division of Clinical Psychology's 4th Annual Digital Healthcare Conference
"Artificial Intelligence and future psychological practice: Opportunities and risks"

Join us for this online conference from 09:15 - 16:00 on Friday 2nd May 2025 as Taking place on Friday 2nd May as we Facilitate AI discussions in clinical practice, expand practitioner knowledge, and gather input to shape DCP's advisory paper on AI in psychological services.

It is no longer a question on if but how AI will transform the work of psychological practitioners. What is AI and how can we harness its powers to enhance the service we offer to our clients? What risks might it pose for us ethically and practically as practitioners?  In the UK, the Long Term Plan (NHS England, 2019) and Darzi Review (2024) of the NHS suggest an ambitious digital future in mind across physical and mental health services which focuses on greater use of genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) to support prevention, wellbeing and more personalized care for patients outside of the hospital. They note that digital mental health is a significant area of potential growth. The focus is on 'enabling technologies' which will support staff to deliver improved care able to be delivered remotely and in the community. AI, for example, will be used to automate routine tasks to increase productivity, especially in a context where demands on the workforce have been high.

This online conference will consider what practitioners, service providers and commissioners need to consider to work towards a digital future which includes effective use of AI in psychological services. It will help participants to consider what some of the opportunities and risks might be of using AI for psychological practitioners.

Conference Aims
  • Enable delegates to discuss important issues surrounding the potential and risks for artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical practice
  • Extend practitioner knowledge and understanding of AI with a focus on emerging innovations, policy guide best practice evidence and lived experience perspectives of digital services
  • Seek practitioner's views to shape DCP Digital HealthCare Committee's forthcoming advisory paper 'Utilising AI in Psychological Services – What might the future hold?'

Attitudes Matter: Exploring Clinician Perspectives on the Future of AI in Psychological Services

This talk explores why clinician attitudes toward generative AI technologies are critical to their safe and meaningful integration into psychological services. I will also present an overview of the two dissertation studies I am currently conducting: one examining the key factors that influence clinicians' intentions to adopt AI tools, and the other exploring their experiences of using AI as a psychological formulation assistant.

Biography: I am a Trainee Clinical Psychologist at the University of Surrey, currently completing a placement on a neurorehabilitation ward. Since the widespread adoption of generative AI technologies, I've become particularly interested in how clinician attitudes shape the integration of digital tools into psychological services. My hope is that, as the field evolves, these technologies are developed and implemented in ways that genuinely support clinicians and, in turn, enhance outcomes for clients

My dissertation research investigates the attitudes of psychology professionals toward generative AI tools. The project is divided into two studies: the first examines key factors that influence clinicians' intentions to adopt these technologies, with a particular focus on threats to professional identity. The second explores clinicians' experience using generative AI as a psychological formulation assistant, exploring the barriers and facilitators to developing and adopting such a tool.
