What researchers need to know about the GDPR

20 December 2018

The British Psychological Society has published new guidance on handling research data following the implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Data protection regulation: Guidance for researchers emphasises that researchers whose organisations were following good practice under the previous legislation will probably need to make relatively few changes to their policies and practices.

It says data protection officers in those organisations will be able to help with individual queries about the handling of research data.

Detailed guidance is then given under six headings:

  • Legal basis for processing
  • Consent
  • Anonymised data
  • Processing ‘special category’ personal data
  • Children
  • Exemptions for research

The Society has also produced a short video on the GDPR to help members.
