Society recommendations on the 2021 REF accepted

06 February 2019

The British Psychological Society has welcomed the publication of final guidance for psychology departments on making submissions to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.

Sarb Bajwa, chief executive of the BPS, said:

“On three important components, the REF sub-panel for psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience has made a decision in line with the recommendations we submitted.

It has decided not to ask institutions submitting to the REF to differentiate between high-cost and other research, the definition of psychology has been revised to reflect the breadth of the subject and the sub-panel is to appoint a specific expert on qualitative methods.

On behalf of the Society and its Research Board, I would like to give our sincere thanks to the sub-panel for being open to constructive discussions and receptive to feedback from the psychology community about these key concerns.”

The REF is undertaken to assess the quality of research undertaken in higher education institutions across the UK. Submissions are made by individual institutions and reviewed by sub-panels of experts in that field.

You can find the sub-panel’s decisions in its open letter and read more about the exercise on the REF2021 website.
