BPS welcomes funding announcement for psychology research

03 July 2019

Psychology research in British universities is to receive the same level of funding, under the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, as research in other sciences and clinical medicine for the first time, Research England has announced.

Chief executive Sarb Bajwa welcomed the move:

“This is a hugely encouraging development for psychology and the result of much work behind the scenes by the Society through our Research Board. It means that, under the REF 2021, psychology will be funded at the same level as other sciences and medicine.

“It is great to see psychology being given the recognition it deserves by UK Research and Innovation and Research England.”

This announcement marks the abandonment of the idea, rejected by the BPS, of separating university research submitted to UoA into ‘high-cost’ and ‘other-cost’.

The increase in the weighting of subject costs for Unit of Assessment (UoA) 4, which covers psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience, is the only change in funding included in the announcement from Research England.

The announcement specifically concerns the funding weighting assigned to UoA 4 for REF 2021 which is used to allocate funding to UK Universities after the REF is completed.
