The British Psychological Society has responded to reports in the press today about the first major study to quantify the impact of Universal Credit on mental health.
“The news that a major study has shown that the welfare system is exacerbating mental health issues among claimants is appalling, but sadly it is not surprising.
We have called for an end-to-end reform of the benefits system, and these figures show just how grave this situation is.
The system should be there to support those who most need it, but is instead causing unnecessary psychological harm to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
The government needs to review the system as a matter of urgency, ensuring that it treats people with dignity and respect, and offers them constructive support.”
