BPS to offer end-point assessment

28 August 2020

The British Psychological Society is delighted to announce that it has been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education as an End-point Assessment Organisation known as BPS Assessment and Awards Limited.

The first apprenticeship standard for which that the organisation will be offering end-point assessment services is the Level 6 Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP), an occupation within NHS England Improving Access to Psychological Therapies.

A PWP is responsible for managing a high-volume caseload of people with common mental health issues efficiently and safely, utilising clinical skills and case management, weekly supervision and other forms of supervision identified as appropriate.

PWPs take responsibility for their own learning and development using reflection and feedback to analyse their own capabilities, appraise alternatives and plan and implement actions.

In their daily work, a PWP interacts with a wider psychological therapies team, which may include other health professionals such as psychologists, therapists, counsellors, employment specialists, community nurses and administrative staff.

They will liaise across a number of different services, including general practitioners, community physical health teams, and charitable organisations that provide related support services, such as mental health charity Mind.

A PWP will be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate, patient-centred and evidence-based care, as an autonomous practitioner working within their scope of practice.

We will be assessing apprentices who have completed at least a 12-month apprenticeship programme, and are ready for their end-point assessment.

Engagement with employers and/or training providers who want to make use of the apprenticeship levy or take advantage of the government supported training costs will happen much earlier, with the BPS supporting all stakeholders in order to prepare for their end-point assessment.

Employers and training providers can contact BPS Assessment and Awards Limited for guidance through the key processes and information, so that they can be well prepared in advance of gateway and end-point assessment of their apprentices.

This is the first step on our new journey to widening the psychological workforce, and we anticipate more apprentices coming on board in the future.
