BPS members receive recognition in the Queen’s Birthday Honours

10 June 2019

Former BPS President Professor Dorothy Miell has been awarded the OBE for services to higher education and psychology in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Dorothy Miell is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Edinburgh. She is also one of the university’s vice-principals as head of its College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

She was president of the British Psychological Society from 2014-15 and is a Fellow of the BPS and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor Miell says:

“I’m delighted to receive this award which I believe honours the teachers, researchers and students of psychology in our universities and underlines the value of their work to society more generally.”

Outside psychology, Professor Miell is a member of the board of the Edinburgh International Festival, Scottish Opera and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Our chartered member Julianne Miles has been awarded the MBE for services to business and equality.

She is co-founder and chief executive of Women Returners, a business that works to create supportive routes back to fulfilling work for professionals who have taken extended career breaks for childcare or other reasons.

She acts as an advocate for returning professionals in government, business and other policy forums, and co-wrote the Government Equalities Office guidance for employers on returner programmes.
