Show content6th International expert-meeting on the clinical approaches of exceptional experiences
You are warmly invited to a unique international event, suitable both for seasoned clinicians and clinical students.
Experienced speakers will widen your clinical appreciation of clients’ presentation of trauma in the form of exceptional experiences.
These may be in visual, spoken and other modalities.
Clinical approaches allow exploration of underlying personal traumas and clients’ unmet needs that these experiences frequently mask.
This is a fast-developing field within psychotherapy that is little-known and often avoided by clinicians, as potentially controversial.
About half of experiencers of quasi-anomalous events find these distressing, and seek explanations and resolution of such as events as hearing voices, anticipating events and other uncanny matters that are often difficult to share with others.
Speakers will show from case histories how these experiences relate to general psychological theory and psychological practice, making accessible the often-surprising opportunities for personal growth and resolution of traumas that these experiences represent.
Previous clinical experience in this field is not necessary to attend, and there will be abundant time for discussion.
The aim of the event is to spread this knowledge more widely and to create supportive professional networking.

Show contentWellbeing: some insights into meanings and practices across cultures
Friday 22 October 10.00am - 4.00pm
You are invited to join us in this exciting conference as we move away from the Western trend of looking at mental health through the narrow lens of diagnosis and categorisation, and look towards some Eastern, African-oriented and Asian understandings of Wellbeing. Through exploring insights into meanings and practices of Wellbeing across cultures, we will see what we can learn from our international speakers, and how we can better serve marginalised groups within the UK.
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop awareness of issues and themes to consider some similarities and differences within and between Eastern and Western philosophies of Wellbeing.
- Explore Wellbeing in terms of meanings and practices across cultures.
- Draw on the presenters’ professional, clinical and lived experiences of working with Wellbeing across cultures.
- Reflect on how some insights into meanings and practices across cultures impact the way we conceptualise Wellbeing.
- Reflect on what Wellbeing can mean and how some insights from today can shape our own practices across the cultures we each inhabit.

The Brave New World of Psychotherapy
We are hoping this event will encourage discussions regarding the changing landscape of psychotherapy practice and training.
Our three main themes are:
-
How the overarching (macro) socio-political changes to the general healthcare landscape such as the way the NHS is moving online and the world of therapy becoming virtual, will shape the future landscape of psychotherapy training, practice and service delivery
-
How the changing landscape will bear down on middle level (meso) culturally appropriate psychotherapy services delivered to already disenfranchised people, and recommendations to helping professionals
-
The (micro) level of grassroots therapy - presented by The Cassandra Centre. Cassandra provides community-based therapy plus has an active outreach programme. The way they have changed their ways of intervening could be a model for others, particularly when engaging with mental health. We’ll explore how the grassroots can shape the socio-political in a circular process.
