As part of the NHS Long Term Plan, it is envisaged that by 2023/24 there will be new and integrated models of primary and community mental health care to support adults and older people experiencing severe mental health problem, including those living with eating disorders.
These new models of care aim to give people greater choice and control over the support they require to live well in their communities.
Alongside this, NHS led provider collaboratives are redesigning the pathway for adults with eating disorders, with an emphasis on community-based support and access to early intervention.
The evidence base surrounding eating disorders relates predominantly to children and younger adults, with very little relating to later life.
Equally, specialist services for people experiencing eating disorders have been shaped with younger people in mind, and there remains a lack of understanding in terms of the prevalence, presentation and treatment efficacy for these conditions in the older adult population.
