The DECP are organising an online continuous professional development event.
We will be hearing from local and national psychologists and researchers about ways in which we can support secondary school aged children.
In particular, we will be focussing on enhancing knowledge about the developing teenage brain, promoting adolescent wellbeing and the role of educational psychologists in understanding and working with children involved in or ‘at risk’ of being involved in gangs.
Keynote speakers confirmed:
Dr John Coleman, OBE, Visiting Professor at the University of Bedfordshire.
Dr Coleman is a psychologist with a long-standing interest in adolescence including the digital world, the teenage brain and children and young people's health. He has been a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (2005-2016) and been awarded and OBE for his work. His most recent book is entitled “The teacher and the teenage brain” will be published by Routledge in June this year.
Dr Dean Burnett, Honorary Research Associate at Cardiff Psychology School, and Visiting Industry Fellow at Birmingham City University.
Dr Burnett is a neuroscientist, lecturer and author. He is well known for his internationally acclaimed bestselling debut book ‘The Idiot Brain‘. His most recent book ‘Psycho-logical: Why Mental Health Goes Wrong – and How to Make Sense of It’ was published in February 2021.

Dr Christopher Arnold, educational psychologist who has worked with vulnerable young people for more than 30 years.
Dr Arnold will be talking about his work on reducing exclusions by analyzing local contextual factors. This led to a screening tool, used preventatively resulting in a reduction of the permanent exclusion rate in an inner city secondary school to more or less zero.
Dr Tom Boden, Solihull Community Educational Psychology Service.
Dr Boden will be talking about his research on gangs which was the subject of his doctoral qualification. He focused on the experiences of gang members, which supports an understanding of the processes that mediate gang membership and offending.

Dr Boden and colleagues will consider the factors affecting positive trajectories and life outcomes amongst adolescents in Solihull during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on reflections from the Solihull YEF Programme, this workshop will explore how the use of community psychology approaches and Adolescent Mentalisation Based Integrative Treatment (AMBIT) can be applied to support at risk adolescents mid to downstream of offending.
Dr Ian Smillie (Educational Psychologist, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board), Dr Charlotte Montgomery (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board), Dr James Cording (Educational Psychologist, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) Laura Mariner (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) and Dr Gemma Burns (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board).
Dr Smillie and colleagues are a team of Applied Educational and Clinical Psychologists in Gwent who are working in partnership with schools to develop a whole school approach to emotional wellbeing: an inclusive model of systems-level change directed by the use of the ‘Spiral of Inquiry’ (Kaser & Halbert, 2014). Their presentation will explore how embedding areas of emotional wellbeing in school communities, so that they are consistently experienced through the school career of CYP can make a real difference to the emotional wellbeing of ‘Tomorrow’s Teens’.
