Did you know that stress can kill you?

As a health psychologist, Professor Daryl O’Connor has been fascinated by how stress can influence biology, psychology and behaviour in ways that may damage our health.

In this talk he will argue that stress can contribute to health risk in two main ways:

  • Directly by influencing biological processes across the life span (e.g., blood pressure, hormone and immune functioning)
  • Indirectly by producing changes in  health  behaviours  that  if  maintained over time may be damaging for one’s health. In the second half of the talk he will also describe recent work investigating how the stress hormone - cortisol – is helping to improve our understanding of suicide risk and describe links to childhood trauma.

The talk will finish with an overview of some techniques we might use to help us lead more stress protected lives.
