Setting up a system of staff support in a Children’s hospital before Covid-19 and psychological interventions for staff during the pandemic
This webinar will discuss the setting up of a system of staff support for the Evelina Children’s Hospital prior to Covid-19
It will describe psychological interventions delivered pre-Covid and in response to different stages of the pandemic.
It will outline a debrief pathway developed and describe different levels of psychological intervention in staff support in paediatric settings, including some suggestions about running group interventions.
There will be an exploration of the evidence base and models which underpin this work as well as looking at the rationale for doing staff support, particularly in paediatrics today.
Evaluation will be discussed in terms of different kinds of outcomes to consider for different purposes and different audiences.
Consideration will be given to delivery of staff support in different ways from paediatric psychologists embedded in medical specialties, to staff support psychologists through to psychologists working from within Occupational Health.
Strategic work at Trust level will also be described including influencing Trust level communication and responses during acute stages of the pandemic.
- To understand reasons why there is a need to support staff in paediatrics today
- To have an appreciation of models useful in delivering staff support and of the emerging evidence base
- To explore definitions of staff support

Dr Harriet Conniff has worked in Paediatrics and in some adult health settings for over 12 years, mainly in intensive care and respiratory. Throughout her career in health, she has been responsible for providing staff support. More recently she gained a post leading on Staff support across the Evelina Children’s Hospital part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) which was the first known staff support psychology post to work at this scale (3,500 staff) outside of Occupational Health domains. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she has worked at Trust level for GSTT (18,500 staff) to support design and delivery
Harriet is systemically trained, specialising in the Solution Focused approach and finds the latter, as well as a systemic consultation model, useful in staff support working. Harriet is a longstanding member of the BPS and sits on the committees of the Paediatric Psychology Network and the Faculty of Clinical Health Psychology, acting in a link role between them. Harriet is an active member of the PPN’s Staff support SIG who have collaborated to write a paper on offering group interventions as part of staff support (in press).
