Workshop reflecting on the meanings and benefits of compassionate NHS organisations, designed to help develop strategies for embedding compassionate practices within the NHS

The notion of a ‘compassionate organisation’ is not a new one in the field of management and leadership. Compassion is commonly perceived as the demonstration of empathy towards others, conveyed through the display of kindness and recognition of shared humanity.

Recently, there is an increasing recognition within the policy context of the need to create compassionate NHS organisations, not only for the benefit of patients, but also for the recruitment and retention of staff. As the concept of creating compassionate working cultures for NHS staff is often proposed in the policy literature, this workshop aims to bridge the gap between a tokenistic nod to compassion and its real-world application by exploring and designing ways of embedding it within the working lives and experiences of NHS staff and organisations.

This workshop will therefore explore the concept of compassion from its Buddhist roots, to what it means in the organisational context and whether it can facilitate healthier working lives. The notion of organisational culture will be unpicked to help gain an understanding of whether organisational cultures can be usefully changed or improved. Participants will design strategies to help embed compassion within their own work settings and the NHS more broadly.

The workshop will be delivered through a mix of theoretical lectures, practical skill-based teaching, the application of knowledge through the analysis of case study vignettes, interactive group discussion and group work, as well as presentations back to the rest of the class.

Target audience

This workshop will be of most benefit Society members who are employed by the NHS or other public sector settings, as practitioners, managers or policy makers. However, anyone with an interest in creating compassionate work places and keen to reflect on what organisational compassion means to them is welcome to attend.

Learning Outcomes

  1. A greater understanding of the concept of ‘compassion’ and how it can be applied to the organisation.
  2. An ability to critically appraise the policy context of creating a ‘compassionate’ NHS
  3. An understanding of the role of compassion in employee health
  4. An ability to design practical strategies for embedding compassion organisationally within NHS settings
  5. A greater sense of the role of compassion in one’s practice in relation to their co-workers
  6. A greater insight into the need for and practice of compassionate self-care as a worker.


Participants are required to undertake reading prior to the workshop which will be sent out in advance.

Facilitator: Dr Maria Kordowicz CPsychol

Maria is a Chartered Psychologist, Quality Improvement Research Fellow and Programme Lead for the MSc in Public Health at the School of Population Health and Environmental Sciences, King’s College London and has been lecturing for over a decade in aspects of health and social care management and delivery.

Maria's research interests concern the governance and policy of new health and social care organisational forms. Maria is part of the King’s College London development team of the idiographic patient mental health outcome measure PSYCHLOPS. Maria is also a member of Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Services Research Network.

Previously, Maria spent over a decade managing NHS programmes, projects and services. Maria has been carrying out independent organisational development, management and research consultancy work on behalf of public, private and third sector clients for over 15 years. Much of her recent consultancy work has centred around people development and creating more compassionate, resilient teams in the face of unprecedented change within the NHS since 2010. Maria is a Principal Practitioner with the Association for Business Psychology and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
