Award for Innovation in Psychology Programmes

 

Accredited courses are invited to submit for this award in recognition of particularly innovative and creative design and/or delivery and/or assessment of psychology programmes for the benefit of the student experience whilst maintaining and/or furthering the highest quality of psychology teaching and learning. Applications are limited to one nomination per department per annual cycle.

Award: Two recipients from the winning department are invited to Society’s Annual Conference, at which they are presented with a commemorative certificate. 

Criteria:  The Award is given as recognition of any particularly innovative and creative design or delivery of psychology programmes or aspects of psychology programmes.  All BPS accredited courses will be considered on equal grounds, including conversion programmes, undergraduate programmes & postgraduate programmes.

The formal criterion is ‘particularly innovative and creative design or delivery of psychology programmes or aspects of psychology programmes’. This criterion is intended to be interpreted broadly but must

  • Be innovative or creative in its design and/or delivery and/or assessment
  • Be distinctive in several aspects of design or delivery or assessment
  • Be effective and add value to the student experience
  • Be accessible to all students

Nomination:  Any programme accredited by the BPS is eligible to nominate themselves. Where visiting accreditation teams identify particularly innovative and commendable practices as part of their work, they may wish to encourage departments to apply for the award. A nomination statement, supported by the Head of Department, clearly stating the grounds for the nomination should be sent by e-mail to the Chair of the Psychology Education Board, c/o Carl Bourton, Policy Administrator at the Leicester Office to carl.bourton@bps.org.uk   

Nomination statements should be supplemented by the following documents

  • Curriculum, including an executive summary
  • Any assessment reports from sources external to the department, including a copy of the QAA report and /or the accreditation report where available.
  • Programme specification
  • Any other relevant supporting documentation that evidences the criteria (this may include e.g. summaries of student feedback, assessment briefs/schedules dependent on the nature of the practices being nominated)

 Advice on what to include within a nomination statement:

  • The nomination statement is important.  The Committee uses this to assess the application against the criteria and to shortlist. Nomination statements should take the form of a narrative (1000 words maximum), highlighting the grounds for proposal.
  • Provide information on why nomination has been submitted and what the particular innovation is, the impact of their innovation on a local, regional, national and or international scale.
  • Use sub-headings to summarise how the submission meets the criteria and highlight any significant materials, and other evidence and developments outlined within the supporting documentation which are relevant to this award.

Conflicts of Interest:Nominators must declare all personal and professional conflicts of interest e.g. if nominating a spouse/partner or other relation. Conflict of interest will not prevent acceptance of the nomination, but will be borne in mind by the awarding panel when considering the award. If there is found to be a conflict of interest that has not been declared, the nomination will be withdrawn.

Awarding Panel: will be appointed by the Psychology Education Board to select the recipient of the award, to include as a minimum, the Chair of PEB, Chair of the Partnership and Accreditation Committee, representatives from Research Board, Professional Practice Board, Membership Standards Board and DARTP. The panel will consider all submission on the basis of:

  • Originality and innovation
  • Impact on the student experience
  • Impact on the department and beyond
  • Overall evidence of innovation

Shortlisting will be undertaken on the basis of the nomination statement alone. Only shortlisted nominations will have the full submission reviewed. Nominators of non-shortlisted nominations will be contacted before the end of March in any given year. The panel is unable to offer feedback on non-shortlisted nominations. Nominators who have been shortlisted will be notified of their outcome before the end of May in any given year and may request feedback. Winners will be announced in The Psychologist.

Departments should be aware, that by submitting their nominations for the award, they are giving permission for details submitted for assessment by the awarding panel may be shared publicly by the BPS via the Annual Conference, the Society’s website and publications.
