FAQs: Academics and Statutory Regulation
I am an academic/researcher in psychology,
how will this affect me?
The government does not propose that statutory regulation should cover
teachers of psychology in schools or on undergraduate courses, nor all teachers
on postgraduate programmes, or academic, research, or experimental psychologists
(some of whom call themselves applied) who work exclusively in the furtherance
of psychological knowledge.
The only teachers whom they propose
should be regulated are those teaching on postgraduate courses who move into
such teaching from a practitioner background andwho are instrumental in teaching
others to become practitioners.
Full details are included in the draft
legislation for the Statutory Regulation of Psychologists.
Who will accredit programmes
in Higher Education Institutions?
The government is consulting on the
proposal that the regulator should have discretion as to how it obtains
professional expertise to carry out professional education accreditation.
We expect the Society will continue to accredit programmes but the roles
of the Society and the Health Professions Council in this area can only be
discussed in detail once the government plans are finalised. We will provide
more information on this when it is available.
In the short term: if you
are involved in an accredited programme as a member of staff you should continue
to plan for any accreditation visit that has been scheduled.
