Research Board

Message from the Chair of the Board:

The Research Board is responsible for influencing the funding of psychological research; providing informed and impartial advice on research issues (including the preparation of expert reports and guidance documents) and the contributions of psychological science and its applications to policy makers (including lobbying and liaison with government, the funding councils, research councils and other influential bodies); defining the standards for training postgraduate students in research methods; research and academic resources; and ethical issues in the conduct of psychological research (including guidelines for psychologists working with animals). For further information on the terms of reference, membership and future meeting dates, please click here.

Unlike the other main Boards of the Society, ALL subsystems are represented on the Board, together with postgraduates, postdoctoral researchers and the Association of Heads of Psychology Departments and the Experimental Psychology Society.

The Board runs a wide variety of schemes to promote the advancement of psychological science including grants and competitions, prestigious award and honorary/memorial lectures. A few schemes are for members only, but many are open to all psychologists working within the UK. The Board is particularly keen to support postgraduate students; thus various schemes are open to them. For further information, please click here.

The Research Board endeavours to be responsive to the wishes and needs of its members. As Chair of the Research Board, I would welcome suggestions for future actions which would support the advancement of psychological science. All suggestions should be sent to me at the Leicester Office (c/o lisa.morrisoncoulthard@bps.org.uk).

Professor Martin Conway
Chair, Research Board
