My research and academic writing has covered childhood epilepsy, head injury, burden upon carers, progress in rehabilitation, psychometric assessment and forensic issues.

Currently I provide services to several Policy forces, and my clinical work includes management of head injury, occupational stress, chronic pain and disability, and coping with trauma.

I have also run programmes abroad funded by the Department for International Development, especially in Bangladesh and Pakistan, including work on violence against women. I have always taken an active role in the Society.

I worked as a researcher on projects concerning children with special needs and then switched my focus to the processes of assessment and training.

Since 1988, I have been working at Loughborough University, where my research has primarily concerned women's health and wellbeing during pregnancy.

I enjoy holidays in the sun, running, films and gardening!

Kate Balla
SMG Representative

I am currently studying for a BSc in psychology at UEL and I am in my final year, which is quite daunting as I will be graduating soon!! After the completion of my degree I hope to do a MSc in neuropsychology, as this is the field I am most fascinated by and this is reflected in my dissertation, which focuses on amnesia. I do voluntary work with Headway, a great organisation for people with acquired brain injury, which I am enjoying very much.

As the SMG representative on the P&C Board, I look forward to many challenges within this role and to representing my colleagues on the SMG Committee!

I’m a psychologist working in the North West, where in future, there will be new, exciting opportunities to promote public engagement activities for psychologists around the UK. Salford, in particular, is a particularly innovative place to work at the moment because of the MediaCity UK, the country’s first designated digital and creative community aiming to redefine a new era of global media communications.

The University of Salford, where I work as a Senior Lecturer in Psychology, has signed an Educational Partnership Agreement with the BBC which will help to identify new talent, focus on learning and development and community relationships. Other venues like the Manchester ideas café and the science festival offers space for engagement activity. Given these developments, it is particularly timely that the BPS annual student lectures will start to be held in Manchester from November 2008.

My previous public engagement work includes authorship of a popular science book in psychology called "Beyond 9 to 5: Your Life in Time" - now translated in Chinese and Albanian. I was a press officer for the BPS Developmental Psychology section, encouraging other psychologists to communicate their research findings. I’ve also been a member of the BPS Executive Research Board and an Associate Editor for The Psychologist.

During the 1960's I studied psychology in London whilst training with amazing people beyond the university, including founding humanistic psychologists. After graduating I travelled around the world acquiring a life-long passion for interpersonal communication and human development. Returning in 1971, I co-founded the Centre for Human Communication.

My work embraced the whole person exploring bodywork and consciousness, the formation of natural organisations and the psychological basis of business. In different decades I did postgraduate neurophysiology, industrial psychology, Japanese language and business at London, Hull and Stirling Universities, all the time pursuing a fractal theory of psychology. I taught at City, Southampton, Solent and overseas Universities.

I am a Chartered Psychologist and member of the Divisions of Occupational and Counselling Psychology. I have served on BPS committees and as Chairman of the Association of Business Psychologists.

I have been chairman, director or CEO of organisations in the publishing, IT, food, professional and civil society sectors in the UK, USA and Asia. Currently, I am director of TSR International and a Justice of the Peace for Hampshire.
