Professional Indemnity Insurance
It is the responsibility of every Chartered Psychologist to ensure that they have third party cover for their work and, where their employers do not provide it, to effect such cover themselves. Other practising members should follow this advice. Professional indemnity insurance protects psychologists from claims resulting from professional advice or services, but the Society estimates that only one in five members have cover. Policies should include support and advice, and cover reasonable costs incurred in the defence or settlement of a claim for professional indemnity, public liability, cases of libel and slander, and inappropriate release of confidential information.
The Society's guidance on professional indemnity insurance has recently been updated.

Criminal Records Bureau Checks for Independent/Private Practitioners
The Society has received a number of enquiries concerning how an independent or private practitioner may obtain a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. The CRB holds on its website details of umbrella organisations which undertake an CRB check in the same way as a local authority. The umbrella orgainsations can be searched by geographical area so that you can find an organisation in your locality. Read more:
