Get Ahead in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology

The Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology represents the interests of psychologists working in sport and exercise settings and aims to further the development of sport and exercise psychology. It draws its membership from a broad range of psychologists including those working in academic settings and professional practice. The Division was formed in 2004 in response to the increase in academic status and public recognition of sport and exercise psychology and ensures that members who practise and offer services within sport and exercise psychology are qualified and trained according to the Charter, Statutes and Rules of The British Psychological Society.

Congratulations to Hayley Barton who is the winner of the Division's Undergraduate dissertation prize for her study entitled "Anticipation skill and susceptibility to deceptive movement in female football players".

On receiving the award Hayley said "It's an incredible honour to have my dissertation recognised by such a prestigious prize - John Whiting was a hugely influential figure in the field of sport psychology."

Haley was supervised by Dr. Robin Jackson from the School of Sport & Education at Brunel University

Members who are concerned about the continued use of the title sport or exercise psychologist by non HPC registered service providers will be interested in the following from Stephen Smith:

I am an HPC investigative Panel member and I am pushing the HPC to expedite action against non registered "psychologists" acting in this field
Members can raise complaints directly with HPC. However some feel reluctant due to a number of reasons including reprisal
As such I am happy to act as an intermediary and take those complaints into the file I am collating to present to the HPC. Basically the more evidence that I can collate that this is a real issue the more likely it is we can generate some action in the HPC
However members must realize I can only act as an intermediary and sharing with me is NOT the same as tasking a complaint formally to the HPC as I am acting on this matter in a personal capacity only and not formally on behalf of the HPC

Best wishes
Stephen Smith, Senior Consultant Psychologist
