The SMG Committee represents all student members of the British Psychological Society and provides undergraduate psychology students with national representation. The committee meets four times a year and consists of six key positions with designated responsibilities and seven general members who assist with projects as necessary.

Meet the Committee...

Chair: Justin Walker (justinwalker1985@hotmail.com)

Hello I am Justin Walker and I’m pleased to introduce myself as the new Chair of the SMG. I am 22 years old and was born and bred in Birmingham. I now live in London and am in my 2nd year of a Psychology degree at London Southbank University. I like to think of myself as an approachable, friendly and reliable guy and I am keen to learn and meet new faces. In my spare time I enjoy socializing, music, reading and travelling (when I can afford it!). I look forward to my forthcoming year in my position with the SMG.

Chair-Elect:
Annabel Harris

PR/Media Officer: Stephen McGlynn

Membership Liaison Officer: Jonathan Hume

Psych-Talk Editor: Helen Galliard (helengalliard@hotmail.co.uk)

I am the Editor for PsychTalk and look forward to reading your article submissions! Send me something - not only will it give you the opportunity to polish up your writing skills, it will look great on your CV! I am currently working towards a BSc (Honours) in psychology at The Open University. I also work in publishing and volunteer with people who have mental health issues. I am interested in all aspects of psychology, but specifically autism, language and gender. I am a yoga teacher, and love yoga as it helps me to relax in between working, studying and volunteering.

International Officer: Rebecca Coenning

General Members

Robyn Taylor (awaywithafaerie@hotmail.com)
Hiya, I’m Robyn and I am one of the new General Members of the SMG Committee and will also assist the Members Liaison Officer. I am just about to go into my third year studying psychology at Lancaster University, and I can’t believe how quickly a degree flies by! My interests lie in mental health and therapeutic interventions, in particular looking at the benefits of complementary therapies as alternatives to conventional medication, such as the use of herbal remedies, and also art therapy, as art is a passion of mine and relates well to psychology. Currently, I am volunteering on projects related to bipolar disorder, children’s cognition in relation to drawings, and also on a help line, which provides a listening service to people who are in distress or despair.

Holly Chinnery (holly.chinnery@students.plymouth.ac.uk)
Hey all. I’m Holly, currently in my final year at the University of Plymouth studying Psychology with Criminology, and will be serving you as a general member on the SMG Committee board. If you have any questions, queries or would like general information ranging from who we are, what we do, to psychological issues; please don’t hesitate to contact me. My interests lie in the connection between clinical and social psychology, specifically that of conforming and mental health. In-between studying I can be found either with friends, volunteering, in the gym, or just chilling with a good book. Once again, if there’s anything you would like to know, however big or small, do get in touch.

Rachel Smith (rachel_c_smith@hotmail.com)
I am currently in the 2nd year of my BSc (Hons) in Psychology at London Metropolitan University and although all areas of Psychology interest me, it is Forensic Psychology that I hope to specialise in. I have always had an interest in this area and my previous work for Essex Police gave me the incentive to study Psychology full time. I also have a love of the theatre so I combine this with my part time work as an HR Assistant at a theatre in the West End of London. I am a general member of the SMG as I wish to assist in all areas, so if you have any ideas, thoughts or queries regarding the SMG, then please contact me and I will voice your opinions and ensure I respond to you ASAP!

Nicholas Denyer (N0167109@ntu.ac.uk)
Hi I'm Nick. I'm currently in my last (3rd) year reading for a degree in BSc (Hons) Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. My main research area is Biological Psychology applied to Cognition, especially the research areas of human sexual behaviour and Cognitive Neuroscience and would be interested in one day working as a Neuroscientist. My role on the SMG is that of a general member, and I look forward to contributing to the SMG. I am also the assistant to Psych-Talk's editor, Helen Galliard.

Kayleigh Parker (Kayleigh.Parker@uwe.ac.uk)
I’m a general member for the SMG committee. I assist other members of the committee and help wherever help is needed. I’m going into my second year studying towards BSc in Psychology at UWE. I am particularly interested in working with people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. I’m a huge rugby fan and follow Bristol rugby (for whom I also work) and England rugby.

Nicole Howard (haynic14@hotmail.com)
It is a privilege to be a representative on the SMG committee; I believe it’s important that students across the country get a voice. I have a passionate interest in psychology since studying it at A-level and now undertaking a 4 year Bsc course. I have recently participated in a 6 month research project with Professor Michael Wright on perception and attention in sport and presented a report to the University. I have gained significant experience in the use of FMRI, EEG and software packages SPM2, SPM5, MATLAB and SPSS and am particularly interested in neuropsychology in the areas of schizophrenia, Parkinson’s and depression.
