The executive committee runs the SDEP. The committee consists of up to 15 members and they are put forward at the annual general meeting. The executive meets four times a year. The committee consists of four executive posts: the chair person, the secretary, the treasurer and the admissions secretary. In addition there is a chair elect, up to ten ordinary members and occasional co-opted members. Committee members sit for three years subject to re-election at the AGM. They can extend their stay on the committee for a further 3 years at the AGM.
Post holders and their functions
Chair - the chair coordinates the many aspects of the SDEP executive’s functions and delegates tasks for the other members of the executive. This would include requests for the SDEP to express a view for a consultation on Scottish executive policy or working groups involved in an issue that affects the professional body of educational psychologists. They chair the meetings and the AGM.
Secretary - the secretary coordinates the agenda for the meetings, writes minutes and summaries and notifies the membership of the issues that have been discussed.
Treasurer - the treasurer keeps account of the SDEP funds. They are also the person to contact for request for funds from the SDEP. These would usually involve request for training events or research but may include other requests.
Membership Secretary - the membership secretary administers the applications to join the SDEP. They consider the applications received, make recommendations on whether to accept the candidate as a member of the SDEP according to the criteria and submit them to the Executive for approval.
Chair-elect - the chair elect is elected from the committee in the first meeting after the AGM. The chair elect will become the chair the following year and spend the year shadowing the Chair to see how the job is done. The purpose for this is to ensure a smooth transfer and the effective functioning of the SDEP executive as a whole.
Ordinary member - the ordinary members can contribute in wide and varied ways to the running of the executive. They usually volunteer to take on delegated tasks of the executive and report back on this at the regular meetings. They can be links to a variety of groups with whom the SDEP has regular contact and may become involved in short life working groups.
Co-opted members - co-opted members are not members of the executive committee. They are co-opted for task or functions that require the involvement of the SDEP and report back to the executive.
Past Chair - the past chair has a role to support the new chair person for the year of their appointment.
Becoming involved in the executive committee
If you would like to become involved in the executive please come along to the Annual General Meeting and volunteer. The AGM is always held at the annual conference in September. To get elected you need to complete a form which is attached and have two members of the SDEP support your nomination. Elections will be held at the AGM.
