To join the SDEP you need to be a member of the British Psychological Society and apply to join the SDEP as a subdivision. To join the British Psychological Society, please use the main contact number. Who can join?
- Qualified Educational Psychologists
- Educational Psychologists in Training (Student Affiliate Membership)
- Other qualified psychologists such as clinical psychologists who work with children in a professional capacity.
The vast majority of the Division's current membership comprises practising educational psychologists along with trainees on courses to become practitioners as educational psychologists.

Society Rules on Joining the SDEP
Members of the Society may be elected to the Division upon application, provided that they qualify via rule 5(a) of the Division's rules, namely:
(i) 'The candidate possesses the Graduate Basis for Registration,' and
(ii) 'The candidate is eligible to practise as an educational psychologist in Scotland, having successfully completed a postgraduate course of training in educational psychology accredited by the Society, and a further period of practice under the supervision of a chartered educational psychologist; the total period of training being of at least three years duration.'

Rule 5(a)(iii) allows for others who may be eligible to join who are in institutions of further or higher education, research bodies, or other organisations concerned with the interests of children and young persons.
Rule 5(a)(iv) allows for the Executive Committee to consider other qualifications which may equate with one or more of the above.
Affiliate members are entitled to all benefits of Full Members with the exception of the right to vote on affairs of the Division; Student Affiliate membership is granted to members of the Society who are undergoing professional training or a period of supervised practice necessary to qualify for Full Membership.
Only chartered psychologists who are admitted to the Scottish Division of Educational
Psychology (or the Division of Educational and Child Psychology, if based in England, Wales or Northern Ireland), and establish their eligibility for Full Membership, via Rule 5(a)(i) and (ii), are entitled to use the title 'Chartered Educational Psychologist'.
