Qualitative Methods in Psychology (QMiP) Section Inaugural Conference

Start Date: 02, September, 2008       End Date: 04, September, 2008 << back
Conference Description
The conference theme is 'Qualitative Psychology: Real World Relevance?' This theme is designed to provoke discussion of the oft cited claim of 'ecological validity' attributed to qualitative research. This claim centres around the bottom-up nature of much qualitative research whereby 'insider' accounts on a given topic are gathered, often within research interview settings. However, it can be argued that much qualitative data such as interview data are generated in specially constructed, even artificial, scenarios such that transferability to 'real life' situations may be compromised. Hence the problems in applying 'knowledge' produced by qualitative research to 'real life' should be discussed. Perhaps the distinction posed between research and 'real life' environments will be problematised?' Conversely, there are many examples around which clearly demonstrate the relevance of qualitative research to various phenomena within applied contexts (e.g. clinical, health, educational, occupational). It is hoped therefore that the conference will both facilitate lively discussion around the theme of real world relevance, and that many examples of 'ecologically valid' qualitative research will be on show.
