Information for contributors

Why contribute?
The BPS West Midlands Newsletter provides a platform for communication with psychologists across the region.  The newsletter allows members to share knowledge, alert fellow professionals to new developments and promotes practices you believe have value.  It also provides an avenue for developing your writing skills and increasing the list of publications to your name.

What the Newsletter covers
We want to include items that will appeal to a wide audience, which includes psychologists of all disciplines, academics and students, members of other professions who also hold British Psychological Society membership and anyone who has an interest in psychology. The following are indicative of the kinds of submissions we welcome but we are open to suggestions. If you have an idea which is not listed, please contact a member of the Committee to discuss it.

General features
Include investigations of current issues, developments, case-studies, reports, new interventions and discussion pieces to stimulate thought about a chosen topic in a new way. These should be between 700 – 1000 words in length, but longer articles may be accepted at the Editor’s discretion.

Research
Academics and practitioners who have undertaken in-depth research have the opportunity to summarise their latest findings. The article should be written in up to 400 words and follow the following layout: Short explanation of the hypothesis, methodology, findings, and a short summary of the key learning points of the research.

Hints and tips
Practical articles designed to convey best practice and be of use to professionals in their everyday work. These should include practical advice, hints and tips and ideas for where further sources of information on the topic can be found, and should be written in up to 700 words.

In the Spotlight
Covers interviews with professionals providing a spotlight on aspects of their practice, or how their careers have developed. ‘In the Spotlight’ articles aim to disseminate best practice in psychology and provide others with an insight into how careers in psychology have developed. If you would be interested in being in the spotlight yourself, please contact the Branch via email for further information.

Event reviews
Short reviews of British Psychological Society and Psychology Postgraduate Affairs Group (PsyPAG) events (workshops, conferences) of around 500 words are welcome.

Book Reviews
The review could focus on a core text, a seminal book, a new edition, or your own book. Reviews should provide a brief overview of the book's contents, a context for its existence, why it is useful and for whom and should be around 300 words in length.

Writing style and format
Please write for an intelligent, educated but non-specialist audience, in clear, non-technical language, which can engage the interest of the membership at large. Pieces containing discriminatory or devaluing language (e.g. sexist, homophobic, racist) will not be included in the newsletter. Please use Arial font size 12, 1.5 line spacing as a minimum, and follow the BPS Style Guide

References should be kept to a reasonable minimum – avoid multiple references at the same point. To facilitate anonymous review, author’s names and affiliations should appear on a separate page.

Submitting your piece
Manuscripts should be submitted as a Word document by email to Luisa Tarczynski-Bowles via [email protected]. Please provide your contact details (email at a minimum) in case of queries, and the name, title and any other information you would like to be shown against your submission in the Newsletter. We reserve the right to edit items where necessary.

If you would like any further information please contact the editor via the branch email. We look forward to hearing from you!
