EuroPsy – A European Standard for Psychologists

The launch of EuroPsy in the UK has arrived!

EuroPsy is the result of a six-year project funded by the European Union to develop a European benchmark in psychology.

It has been accepted by the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA), an organisation representing almost 200,000 psychologists in 32 European states, as the European standard of entry to professional practice - equivalent to our own Chartered Status.

EuroPsy does not of itself represent a licence to practise and does not supersede the requirements of national registration or licensure. It does, however:

  • set a common benchmark for academic and professional competence in all the countries where it is issued
  • fit well with the adoption throughout the EU of Directive 2005/36/EC on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications
  • aim to facilitate the mobility of qualified professionals across Europe
  • entitle those psychologists who meet the criteria for the award to be entered onto the national EuroPsy register and receive a certificate confirming them as a EuroPsy registered psychologist

The implementation of EuroPsy is being piloted in six countries, including the UK, prior to its anticipated introduction throughout Europe during 2009.

The Society has played a key role in the EuroPsy project and the development of the guiding principles, regulations and procedures governing the award.

The Society’s President, Professor Pam Maras, said, "It is essential that psychological services to individuals, groups and organisations are provided by psychologists who are fully qualified and adhere to clear principles of professional ethics wherever they practise. We are convinced the EuroPsy standard is the best possible way to guarantee both good quality and free mobility of qualified psychologists and psychological services in Europe."

As a Chartered Psychologist who potentially meets the criteria for the award of EuroPsy, we would like to invite you to apply to become one of the first ever EuroPsy registered psychologists.
