Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors

The Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors is designed to recognise Chartered Psychologists' special expertise in supervision.

The purpose of the Register is to recognise skills in supervision. The impetus for this originated in the requirements of postgraduate psychology training for clinical supervision on placements, and the necessity for the provision of training in supervisory skills to meet this need.

Applicants for the Register are required to provide evidence of training in an agreed set of supervision skills. The criteria identify an approach to supervision that is informed by psychological knowledge, research and good practice.

It is a generic approach rather than one that is specific to a particular psychological model, and the skills obtained by members will be relevant to the many different requests for supervision that are received. These skills are contained within learning objectives that have been adopted as the suggested content for supervisor training that is provided by Society-accredited doctoral training programmes in clinical psychology. These have also been adopted by other providers of supervisor training. Discussions have suggested that these learning objectives are relevant and appropriate to members of all Divisions in the Society.

Being on the Register indicates the possession of basic skills in supervision, and individuals are strongly encouraged to participate in continuing professional development to maintain and enhance these skills.

Registration lasts for five years, and there is a requirement for members to reapply for Registration on this basis. To achieve this successfully, they will need to self-certify that they have engaged in a minimum amount of further training in supervision and also that they have practised as a supervisor for a minimum period within those five years.
