Welcome to the website for the North East Branch of the BPS. Please note that this site is currently in development so please keep revisiting for any changes and developments! Like the site, we are also a relatively new branch of the Society, and we hope that you will be enthusiastic in attending events and making this an active and vibrant branch. Please contact us with any ideas you have for events - your contributions will help ensure the future success of our young branch!
The Branch officially came into being on 4 February 2003 when an open general meeting was held at York St John College to elect the committee and formally constitute our existence as part of the society. Since then, the Branch has worked closely with the Leicester Office to ensure that branch members have representation at all levels of the Society.
Currently the branch consists of some 3,380 members drawn from a geographical area that extends from the River tweed to the Wash and from Hull to the borders of Lancashire. In our first year we have held scientific events for all members at the Universities of Sunderland, Teesside and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Our committee includes academic psychologists, practitioners and students. The committee organises events and promotes psychology in the North East of England. All members of the BPS who live in the North East of England are automatically our regional members.
One of our aims is to be able to bring psychologists from different walks of life together to share experiences, learn from each other and get to know each other. At our inaugural meeting we made an undertaking to be a roving branch and we are keen to ensure that we are able to reach all our members. We welcome anyone with ideas on how to improve/extend the Branch Activities - if that's you, please get in touch!
